The purpose of  imposing taxes by states over the years include

1. For defense of  the country against enemies and for wars

 

2. Enforcement of  law and order , protection of  property. This includes housing, salaries and other support for  the local police force and judiciary.

 

3. Economic infrastructure like roads, harbors and public transport systems like railways, buses.  Public utilities like water , electricity supply and waste water treatment are also funded by the government

 

4. Educational systems, funding for scientific research and the healthcare systems for the underprivileged is funded by the government

 

5. Some countries provide pensions for the elderly and unemployment benefits also.
